Canoeing is a great outdoor sport, something the whole family can enjoy. Many who take up canoeing will start by renting one while they gain expertise and get to know the different makes and types of canoes.
When the day comes to buy your own canoe, the next step is to have a place to store it securely. Storing canoes is not always as easy as it may look. The hulls are curved and not flat like some other types of boats so you can’t just set them somewhere on the ground. There are many options for storage, but one reliable option is a canoe storage rack.
Having a canoe storage rack is an important part of having a canoe. With so many options out there to choose from, put together, make or build, it can be hard to know which one would be the best for you and fit the need that you have.
Choosing canoe storage racks
One of the first things to take into account is the size and weight of your canoe. Making canoe storage racks that go along with the size and weight of your canoe will ensure a better fit. Be sure to measure the place where it will be put and compare it with size of your canoe to make sure you get a good fit overall.
Many canoe storage racks are made to be mounted on the wall. Then you simply slide the canoe on to the rack and the canoe can be strapped on.
Another kind of rack is one that is mounted and/or hung from the ceiling. This model of canoe storage racks can be a real plus for those with little storage room in their storage shed or garage.
You may want to take a look at a couple different canoe storage rack models whether through photos on line or in your local sporting goods store. And as you do, keep in mind the size and dimensions of your canoe, comparing some of the features of the racks you see.
Depending on how many canoes you have or plan to get in the future, another feature you may want to include in making your canoe storage rack, is making one that will hold more than one canoe.
Choosing your building materials
There are different types of building material that you can use in making canoe storage racks. Some of the main ones used today are made of wood, metal and/or plastic.
Making your canoe storage racks
Following are step by step instructions for a strong, easy to make canoe storage rack.
What you’ll need:
• 2×4 inch wood
• 4 screw hooks
• Half inch utility chain
• Stud finder
• 4 eyehooks
• Tape measure
Step 1: Measure your canoe’s hull with tape measure at the widest point. Cut two pieces of wood 6 inches wider than what you just measured. Drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole 1 ½ inches from each end of your piece of wood.
Step 2: Take your utility hooks and screw them into the holes you just drilled. Check to see that each of the hooks face away from each other when they are screwed in. With your stud finder, find two rafter studs in the ceiling, at least 8 feet apart.
Step 3: Drill four pilot holes through the ceiling and into the rafters at a distance of 36 inches apart. Screw the eyelet hooks into pilot holes. Connect a 36 inch long utility chain to each of the eyelets. Then connect the cross members you made from the 2×4 wood to the chains with the utility hooks. To store your canoe, turn it over with the hull facing up, slide the nose of the canoe onto one cross member then slide the rear of the canoe onto the other cross member.
